Artist of the Year 2006
I was honored to be named Santa Cruz County's Artist of the Year for 2006, which puts me in the company of such artists as James Houston, Morton Marcus, Tandy Beale, George Barati, Adrienne Rich, Frans Lanting, and others. To mark the occasion, I decided to produce a work in progress, which will unfold over several weeks and have an eye to making an example for students and writers showing how one writer goes from idea to published story.
The project began with Writer's Improv, a live, two-hour session where I wrote online, and the audience could watch precisely what appeared on my laptop screen. Then comes finishing the story, polishing it, and commenting on the process. It will eventually appear in an anthology compiled by Dana Stabenow.
So far we have the following:
--Writer of the Year
--The story as it appeared on May 20, 2006
--Laurie's Blog entry, and interesting comments

Laurie R. King is an internationally known, New York Times bestselling mystery writer. Laurie is a third-generation northern Californian, with two children, a BA in comparative religion, an MA in Old Testament Theology, and an honorary doctorate from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific.
Since her first book, A Grave Talent, came out in 1993, she has gained a reputation as a prize-winning, best-selling author who holds an undying place in the hearts of readers ranging from fourteen year-old girls to members of the House of Lords to ninety year-old retired Air Force colonels.
Her fiction falls into three areas. First in the hearts of most readers comes Mary Russell, who met the retired Mr. Sherlock Holmes in the winter of 1915 and became his apprentice, later his partner, and eventually his wife. King's other series concerns San Francisco homicide inspector Kate Martinelli, her SFPD partner Al Hawkin, and her life partner Lee Cooper. King has also written three stand-alone suspense novels, a futuristic novel, as well as a number of short stories.
King has won the Edgar and Creasey awards, the Nero, and the MacCavity; her nominations include the Agatha, the Orange, the Barry, and two more Edgars. Ms. King regularly donates her time (and books) to local organizations, schools and libraries.
