Let the wild rumpus begin!

It’e2’80’99s Monday of Edgars week, and Laurie made it to New York with no problems at all! A flight from SF under five hours, the man in front of me didn’e2’80’99t lie in my lap, and I had the forethought to buy a tasty veggie wrap in SF so I even had something to eat other than the airplane mean. Success!

I’e2’80’99m staying at the Library hotel again, home from home although this part of New York seems infected with sidewalk labors, and where there isn’e2’80’99t a boardwalk, there are barriers. All part of live in the big city.

Tuesday promises to be a long day. Breakfast at Random House, lunch with Recorded Books, a video taping at their studio, drinks on the sidewalk (with luck, sans construction) at the Black Orchid, followed by dinner with friends. I may be catatonic by this time Tuesday night, so don’e2’80’99t expect a post’e2’80’a6

I was in SF Saturday to give a talk to the local Mystery Writers of America group, talking about promotion, among other things. And what I had to admit was, none of these things’e2’80’94coming to NY for Edgars week, going to Bouchercon in September, printing up postcards or bookmarks’e2’80’94none of them is in any way remotely cost effective if you’e2’80’99re trying to do a Profit-and-Loss on the business of writing.

But that isn’e2’80’99t why I do them. I enjoy seeing my friends and making contact with the industry I work in, and if sclepping to New York is the only way to do that, then schlep I do.

I’e2’80’99ll try to post daily, but in the meantime, keep an eye on Sara Weinman’e2’80’99s activities here as well. I’e2’80’99ll probably find our paths cross any number of times the next few days, but so far, I’e2’80’99ve just seen my hotel.

More anon.

After hearing you rave of The Library last year, we booked at The Library’s sister hotel The Giraffe for our visit to NYC last September. (The Library was full.) The Giraffe was fabulous too! So if you find yourself Library-less, just ask for a booking at one of their sister hotels!

NYC is a fabulous city, with something for everyone’s tastes: architecture, exotic food like knishes and pirogis, streetlife and buskers, museums, shopping and more.

I don’t know how you do all that you do without being sidetracked by the wonders of the Big Apple! Heh. Have a safe trip and a productive one, and have a knish for me.

Laurie, If you find yourself in the New York subway, you might want to check out my brother Tom’s bronze sculptures.
