c’est fini

TOUCHSTONE is finished. The world’s longest rewrite, certainly MY world’s longest rewrite, and I’ve sent it off to my editor just in time for the frantic last-minute business of getting off to New York. The first draft a year ago was 400+ pages, the second draft in December was slightly more than 500, this (final, absolutely, no questions except maybe tweak a couple things) version is 640 pages, 170,000 words, polished and perfect and gloriously alive on the page. I feel as if I’d been pulling a car uphill for the past three months. I feel as if my head is leakng grey matter. I feel…

…relieved.

It’ll be party time in New York, I tell you what.

What a fantastic feeling of lightness you must have. Do you feel any angst at not having the weight you must have become accustomed to? Or just relief? Now what new project are you taking on first? Wow. Happy trip.

WOW!!! Congrats! I am so happy for you! You must feel like a huge weight has been lifted off your chest, not to mention your grey matter. New York, here Laurie comes…look out! You know, I’ll be out that way this summer…

I was hoping to come see you in New York, along with my daughter. Alas, my coworker decided to go on vacation next week and I must work in her stead. Sigh!

When I finish with a big deadline or finish the school semester or something of that ilk, I find that for the next couple of days it is as if my brain goes to sleep. I do things like wear two different shoes or forget my wallet with my train pass, bank card, money, checks, etc.–and I am already on the train on my way to work when I realise this.

Congratulations on your finished book. I am glad that you will not have that weighing on you as you visit New York. I am truly sorry that I will miss you there. Hopefully you will be hitting the East Coast in the not-too-distant future.Enjoy your stay in New York. This weekend in Pennsylvania is supposed to be very nice. So yours in NYC should be nice, too.

Congratulations! I’m very happy for you, but probably even happier for myself (Hurray! A new LRK!) 🙂 I hope you have time now to slow down a bit, breathe, garden, swim — whatever lets you reconnect gently with your world in something other than crisis mode. Have a great time in NY!
