My good buddy Dana Stabenow is a video star!
It’s a great example of how to make, and use, a video, with pizazz, personality, and humor.
This is how it came about, in her words:
1. I saw the Reduced Shakespeare Company in London.
2. I moved back to Kachemak Bay and joined the Homer Yacht Club.
3. I crewed on the Joy under the command of Captain Mark Brinster.
4. Mark’s day job just happens to be videographer.
5. Eureka! Shazam! Syzygy!
6. Mark and his grip came to my house with approximately two tons of equipment and we shot it in two hours.
7. He went home and edited. Being a gifted artist, he was going for beauty and quality and perfection. I told him I wanted Looney Tunes and suggested sound effects.
8. Voila!Seriously? I’ve never liked being in front of a camera, but this was fun. Maybe it was because I got to write the script, maybe it was because I’ve crewed under Mark and I know he’s a good captain, maybe I watched so many videos good and bad during the past election that I thought “How hard could it be?” I really got a bang out of hamming it up. I’ll be doing this again.
We all hope so, Dana. Personally, my reaction was, “Man, I’ve GOT to go read them all again.” Which, really, is what a book video is all about.
I just love it that one of my favorite authors (You) enjoys the writing of another of my favorite authors (Dana). It does make me wonder what you think of the Virginia Lanier’s “Bloodhound” series (may she rest in peace!).
The video is almost, not quite, but almost as good as the books. I may need to re-re-read them again, as well. Next BoucherCon, can I buy you and Dana and Val beers and just sit and listen? Please?
“Next BoucherCon, can I buy you and Dana and Val beers and just sit and listen? Please?”
Me too, please!!! Frankly, a video of that conversation would we worth its weight in gold, or copper, whichever is selling higher at the time. Just say’n.
Now that I’m pondering it, I think we should throw Charlaine Harris into the mix for added spice. She was a hoot a B’Con. –Alice
Oh-Oh me too! I’ll be the unobtrusive but listening in barmistress!
As for the video? Loved it! Can’t wait for the Laurie-R-King-dresses-as Mary-Russell version!
Thanks for sharing!

Me Too! Me Too! If they get to I want to too!….I have never read any of your books, but I am going to stop at the library on the way home and get some;-)…..If we have enough people buying beers, we won’t get ANY work done for a LONG time! Yeah!
Oh, that sounds like I haven’t read any of Dana’s books, but I have read EVERYONE….But…Ms. King, I haven’t read any of your’s so…I have to fix that;-) Later!
That’s such a great video–it really shows off her humor and personality, which is a great way to connect with readers. Thumbs up!
vicki: I agree; the video definitely grabbed my interest! Haven’t read any of Dana’s books yet, but I’m thinking I’ll have to hit the bookstore now. A new series for the new year, perhaps!
Thanks for sharing, Laurie=)
Speaking of BoucherCon (just assume that we were …) — I just got home from the Indiana Library Federation annual meeting (in Indy) and right there in the midst of all the book and supply displays in the exhibit hall was a booth for BoucherCon 2009 (and the Mystery Company)!! Cool!! Looks like plans are afoot (sorry …). The booth was nicely presented, lots of people stopped by … can’t wait!!
Ever since I got my new laptop which has this new feature, a web cam, I have been tempted to make a video for my web site.
Oh no! I didn’t know Virginia Lanier died!! I’m sad :-(. Just picked up one of the Bloodhound books at the library and loved it.
My dream is to go to a Bouchercon and be a fly on the wall in a room with Dana, Charlaine Harris, Joan Hess, etc. and so forth…if buying y’all drinks will do it, count me in!!
