Laurie’s where?

Head still spinning from the road, I now have four days to sit and let my spirit catch up with me before I get on another plane and leave it behind again. I have a number of thoughts on the whole touring business, and on specific places and events, but in the meantime, here’s LRK on the upcoming Robert Downey/Jude Law Sherlock Holmes movie, and here’s a great conference coming this summer in Corte Madera, just north of San Francisco, that I appear to have agreed to teach at, along with the Pasadena conference in June that I did know about.

Come and play, at either or both. I’ll try and make some sense by then

Interesting article but, I have two words for Mr. klinger — Jeremy Brett. Has he not heard of the wildly popular Granada series that was produced in the late 80s and early 90s? That series, and Mr. Brett’s protrayal of Holmes, brought The Great Detective to an audience that had never enjoyed the stories before, and Sherlock Holmes was once again “wildly popular” across the world.

I plan to be in San Francisco for the talk between Laurie and Les Klinger and I will have to ask him why he left off mentioning the actor who many feel has defined Holmes for this and future generations. Robert Downey, Jr. is a fine act but…Holmes??? I just can’t reconcil the fact he hasn’t the body type or the height to “be” Holmes. I fear for a Holmes that is billed as an “action hero”… heaven help us.

I can’t help wondering if an editor left Jeremy B on the editing room floor of the Calgary paper. It seems a puzzling omission. I am quite certain that Les saw a local production of SH: The Final Adventure, because I saw it too, as did our SC above. It ran its premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse in May/June of 2006 and was a pretty good show. I think it compounded two from the Canon with a dash of William Gillette.
Meanwhile, the conferences should be excellent. I’ve gone to the one in NoCal several times, so you could ask me questions if you wanted (see VBC). The one in SoCal is jointly sponsored by MWA and Sisters in Crime and sustains my theory that everything comes to Pasadena if you wait a bit. Though no King Tut so far.

I await RJD Jr. as SH with guarded optimism//Meredith

I agree that Robert Downey Jr isn’t the right body type for Holmes but he does have deep insight into the addiction issue that Holmes struggles with.

agreed re: jeremy brett; thankfully, pbs has been playing the various series in rotation for some time. check local listings; it airs thursdays on the east coast–one of the highlights of my week.

downey is a fine actor and, for an american, may well do a good job. at least it did not go to some ninny like ben affleck. he is an excellent character study and mimic (charlie chaplin, anyone?) and, as has already been mentioned, may likely relate well to issues of chemical dependence.
