Twenty Weeks of Russell: Week Four
What’s this I see? Mary Russell has a new post over on her MySpace page? Episodes of “A Case in Correspondence” will appear there Wednesdays, and here Fridays, throughout our Twenty Weeks of Buzz. What on earth are the world’s greatest detective and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, up to now?

This is the one-year anniversary of Mary Russell’s entrance onto the Twitterscape, to the amusement of many and the bemusement of one Laurie King. Those of you who have enjoyed Russell’s Tweets and want to suggest her for a Shorty award can do so here, using the following format:

(Although I shudder to think what Ms Russell will say if she finds she’s been nominated as a creature of fiction…)

Finally, you know that puzzles keep your mind supple, don’t you? Well, your mental yoga for the week, compliments of jtb1951, is waiting for you here—and if you’re finding it too tough, the clues will go up there tomorrow. Answers will be given Sunday, and a drawing from those who’ve sent in their solutions.
What a wonderful writer Laurie is. I have enjoyed all the Russell/Holmes works except Language of Bees. I was so looking forward to it, and I was so disappointed. Somehow I just don’t want to see Mary domesticated into becoming a grandmother. I also prefer to have the Holmes’ son thing left vague, unresolved and shadowy.
I experienced this book as difficult to sink into. I didn’t find the character development to be as nuanced as, for example, the characters of Ali and Mahmoud.
The settings, so carefully constructed and illustrated in the other works, left me unengaged in ‘Language…”.
For the first time since becoming a fan way back in the Apprentice, I am not eagerly awaiting the next Russell/Holmes adventure.
That’s too bad, because I think The God of the Hive is pretty good…

The Language of Bees is only the first half. Perhaps you should have waited for the rest of the novel. Grandmothers have character too. And what is wrong with maturing I would like to know? I am old enough to be a grandmother, and I am half way to a black belt in martial arts and the mother of five grown offspring. Of course she would love the child, she loves Holmes. I would be disappointed if she had not.
