The happening place

I’m in Los Angeles for Left Coast Crime, the mystery conference for the country’s looser nuts.  It doesn’t begin until this afternoon, which leaves me a few hours to frantically catch up on work.  And to write a blog telling about how I’m frantically catching up on work, which seems like cheating, somehow.

In any event.  Rhys Bowen, Hannah Dennison, and I had a lovely evening at the sparkling Santa Monica library last night, chatting about Writing Brit (and in their case, Being Brit.)  Thanks for those of you who came out to hear us, and for my ladies in the front row wearing their shiny new God of the Hive t-shirts, especially Marjorie who flew across the country for the conference, thus making herself an Honorary Loose Nut.

We had three winners of the broadside, “A Venomous Death”: Kathy R (A Goodreads friend), Ashley W (who got the latest diabolical puzzle correct), and Jessica W (from Twitter.)  congratulations, ladies.  And don’t forget to send me those zingy Sherlockisms, for your chance at winning an advanced reading copy of The God of the Hive.   Even if the dog did nothing in the night time except wake everyone on the block.

And speaking of winners, look at what Rori did to illuminate Mary Russell’s MyStory, here.  If you’re moved to illustrate the story yourself, the instructions are here, and the winner gets instant fame, and a broadside of “Birth of a Green Man.”   And maybe more if you catch me in a generous mood…

And now, back to the action in Los Angeles!

    Laurie,
Very honored to have won the evening’s Loose Nut award, even though I’m Merrily, not Marjorie. However, I told Marjorie that this means she got to be there Virtually!
And you were great on the panel, as always!

    Dear Laurie,

I have a sneaking suspicion that you meant to say that Merrily is the honorary Loose Nut. Unless there is more than one Marjorie that would travel 3,000 miles to see you (very possible) or I have finally figured out how to be in two places at the same time!!!

–Marjorie (who wishes she could be there, but is still saving up for that other big shindig in October)

Oh heavens, clearly I haven’t had my coffee yet. Ahem, Merrily. If you guys are awake and chipper, why aren’t we having breakfast?
And Marjorie, I can only suppose that my subconscious was hoping you might appear…

One could be mistaken for far worse persons than Marjorie! Hope that you are now firing on all cylinders, Laurie, with sufficient coffee taken on board…

Envious much, of all you cool kids having fun at LCC! And may I just say W-O-W about Rori’s Illuminated version of My Story? That’s amazing! DD and I had lots of fun printing out and putting together Brigitte’s version of it, so we’ll have to do Rory’s version as well and start a collection–cool!!

Laurie, it was so lovely to see you at the library and to listen in on the great discussion and question/answer session between you, Rhys, Hannah and the very appreciative audience. A bonus was that I recognized Merrily and Alice from their 1)presence 2) t-shirts and 3) posts on their 2009 travels, so got to say hello to them in person for the first time!
Have fun at LCC, everyone–wish I could join in, but I’ve got this thing called work tomorrow and Saturday and obligations to my students on Sunday.

Thanks to Vicki and Laurie for the overly kind words about my version of the illuminated story. I’m glad it’s being enjoy! THanks again for the appreciative nod in my artist ( I suppose) direction!

I had more fun at LCC than several barrels full of monkeys. (I’d have been daft not to attend: the venue is about 30 min from my house.) So much fun that I had to wait into a break on Monday before getting fingers on keyboard. That work thing…always there.
Would certainly have liked to have the Marjorie and the Merrily both present!

    And Rori, indeed, Faantastic!!! //Meredith
