God of the Hive, day one

Today is publication day for The God of the Hive.  More than a year of labor from a lot of people, beginning with the author and going through a dozen departments in Random House, branching through a whole bunch of fabulous and committed volunteers who just love the books, the source of worry and the result of long consultations, legal contracts, business agreements, artistic considerations, excitement and anticipation and pleasure.  And now we’re here, the book is on the shelf, and it all boils down to one question: Will people buy it?

This is a book I love and am proud of.  I hope you like it, too.  I hope you help me celebrate its birth-day.

And to illustrate how the book world works so long in the future, you can now read an interview about my next story, here.

As of this moment, the book is #150 on Amazon’s list and that is outrageously great. I hope it climbs even higher! Congratulations.

I’m so excited! I have ordered the book, but I can’t pick it up until four o’clock this afternoon (I really wanted to skip class to get it, but I decided that Mary would disapprove). Congratulations on its publication.

Wow. You are going to be speaking in Washington, DC on 5/1. I will be in San Francisco visiting family and friends. Oh Well, I will see you the next time your in Washington or the next time I am in San Francisco. Good luck. I have told many friends about you. One I think is going to look into you when she is looking for another mystery. I ordered my copy from your Heifer/Amazon page. I have bought all of your books from that page so Heifer will get money. It must be up to $40, but I am unemployed now so it is a problem. Amazon told me on Sunday that my “Hive” is on the way.

At the stroke of midnight, I was able to download GOTH onto my Kindle. Kind of a Harry Potter experience. What could I do but stay up until I finished it? Beautiful, gripping book, Laurie. Thank you so much.

Loved the newsletter today, Laurie. Congratulations to you on the publication of GOTH and to your wonderful art and multimedia team on the gorgeous work in the newsletter, its various links, and this website. Such beauty and craftsmanship honors not only your superb work, but the intelligence and interest of all of us loyal readers. Much success to GOTH and to you.

Congratulations. I ordered it through the Heifer/Amazon site today and it should be here on Thursday. Can’t wait to read it. I will devour it just as I have all your previous books.

Laurie, just after I posted my comment above, I clicked on the weekly e-mail from Barnes and Noble, and was delighted with the subject line:

40% Coupons Are Here. So is Laurie R King’s Eagerly-Awaited New Book.

    Super!

Laurie – I’ve been following you online forever (since the early RUSS-L days), but you never seem to come to Denver (I live in Colorado Springs).

How about coming for a signing??

    Thanks! – Phil

Happy Publication Day! Thank you so much for making the audio version available today as well as the hardcover. I’ve just been over to audible and its now on my mp3 player just waiting while it charges up. Like Edna wrote – digital copies are something like a Harry Potter experience. Congratulations again from a fan in Canada – now I’m off to listen!

Out of curiosity, which was harder- birthing children or books?

CONGRATS ON THE LAUNCH! I hope Boston is sparkling and welcoming and appreciative of your travel efforts to return to this continent!

Fantastic! It feels so good to have the new book on the shelves. We’re promoting your broadside drawing here at Third Place Books in Seattle.

I got the book today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am SO excited! I started reading even before I got out of the bookstore!

  18. Kathy on April 27, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Happy Birth of your new book day! Enjoy!

  19. La Donna on April 28, 2010 at 9:28 am

Finished. Although it nearly finished me off several times. Oh my goodness. Now to read it again and savor all the intricacies. (and Who was the painfully introverted Royal (p. 279)? (I have a guess but am not willing to commit to it out loud))

Are you done with the next book yet?? No hurry. Much.

  20. Kelly on April 28, 2010 at 9:32 am

I’ve just gotten notification that the book has been dropped into my post box and is waiting to be picked up. I have an exam in a few hours that I am in desperate need of studying for. Decisions, decisions…

(I can’t wait until it’s finally in my hands!!)

    Congratulations on the publications!

  21. Christine on April 28, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Thank you Laurie, I enjoyed it so much! Had the day off work and so I devoured the book in various chairs all over Chicago, breathlessly tense (but in a good way). I agree with La Donna: I’ll be re-reading it slowly, soaking in more details now that I’m not so worried about the characters. Thanks again, well done YOU.

  22. Merrily on April 29, 2010 at 9:51 am

Congratulations, Laurie, I’m so happy to see this Russell book joining an increasingly long and distinguished line of wonderful books from you. Oh, and have I ever bought it, I already have the hardback version, a Kindle version, and am waiting eagerly for Recorded Books to come out with the audio book!
My “Laurie R. King” shelf has filled up and is now clamoring for more shelf space!

  23. Merrily on April 29, 2010 at 9:53 am

And thanks to another comment on this page, just found out that the Audible version is available!
Off to purchase when I get home…

  24. Rachel on April 29, 2010 at 5:13 pm

Laurie, GOTH was phenomenal, and I’m so glad I decided to set aside studying to finish it in one go, because I absolutely could not put it down 🙂 I can’t wait for the next one!

  25. Ash on April 29, 2010 at 6:25 pm

I am looking forward to reading it as soon as I get it!!!

I’m in Europe, and shaking my fist at the time it takes for published material to cross the Atlantic. I’ll be eagerly keeping an eye out for it here… or trying to meet people who know someone in the US who can send it to me.
