20 rue Jacob is a 17th century house where the American writer and heiress Natalie Barney, an outspoken lesbian, held weekly literary and artistic gatherings.

Homosexuality has been effectively legal in France since the Revolution in 1791, one of the contributing factors to the flowering of artistic life in the capital city after the Great War.
