British invasion
|June 16, 2009|
Hey Brits, on the first of September, you’ll have your very own Language of Bees–and shortly thereafter, a tour:
That’s right, the pub date is 1 September, and although we’re setting up events now, I can say that I’ll be at the Reading Festival of Crime on Sept 12, talking about Murder in Mind with Sophie Hannah, Steven Booth, Jane Hill and R J Ellory.
If you are a librarian, or you would like to suggest a library for me to do an event, post a comment with their information and we’ll have the publishers add them to the list being considered.
See you then!

This is an interesting cover…! Not sure it says ”Russell and Holmes” to me, but then I really liked the covers on the Allison and Busby hardbacks of The Game and Locked Rooms. Looking forward to adding it to my collection, as well as more tour details; I just hope there isn’t TOO much travelling for you!
All best wishes
Chris
PS – is it my eyesight, or have they changed the R for an L…?
🙂
Chris, it looks like a L to me also. I love the US book cover and find this version not only dated (it looks like a poor imitation of a Nancy Drew)but it is quite confusing. Why is the person balancing a book on her hand? Why do the bee hive chambers look more like some molecule or chemical representation? Truly, this is poor cover art.
Looks like some sort of code. I don’t mind the cover. Maybe the L will be corrected. Anyhow hope I can avoid any spoilers before I get to read it.
I’ve loved many of the British covers, especially MREG, OJER, and MOOR, but I agree with Alice about this one. I’m glad it’s not ours. I suppose the book is a copy of Testimony.
It IS an L. On behalf of all Richardsons (my mother was one), what’s going on?
Olawd. Is that supposed to be Russell? She has my maternal grandmother’s exact haircut and color in that cover. How amazingly wrong, I’m quite disturbed.
At the risk of causing upset – phew, it’s not just me! There have been some stunning covers over here, but yes, it DOES look reminiscent of early Nancy Drews! Compare this with the UK hardback of Locked Rooms, say (same publisher), and you’ll see what I mean. Fine for all us die-hards, but will it attract new readers? I do have the US edition, I’m the impatient sort, and couldn’t wait till September to read LANG. Ho hum!
I agree with you, Pat, about those titles – great illustrations!

Please come to Luton and / or Bedforshire! Even if the Rough Guide tells you not to go out of your way to see us!

Here’s some of our lovely countryside: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-dunstabledownscountrysidecentrewhipsnadeestate
And here’s some obscure Bedfordshire culture: http://www.thebedfordshireclanger.co.uk/
Whoops on the “L,” though I think that is one of Laurie’s initials. A Richardson uprising might ensue. I don’t know about this one. I love considering what Russell looks like. I suspect this lady was (loosely) based on Patricia Hodge’s face (best remembered by me as Phyllida Erskine-Brown on “Rumpole of the Bailey”). The long and slender frame seems okay. I’d vote for more cheek bones and a touch of curl in the hair. Don’t our nice silhouettes suggest a little curl? best to all//Meredith
How about an international atmosphere for Mary?

(although not an independent bookshop, but a good one nevertheless)
I guess I’m in the minority here. I LOVE this cover! I do wish it had something about Holmes on it, but otherwise I love the retro Nancy-Drew look. Fantastic!!
I love the cover! But the initial change is kind of weird.
