From page 84: Vavin was originally a rubble heap that Medieval students had jokingly dubbed “Mount Parnassus.” The sacred home of Greek Muses became the Parisian home for wine, women, and bad poetryuntil eighteenth century city planners flattened the mound in the interest of traffic flow, leaving on the name, and the attitudes.

The busy Carrefour Vavin (Vavin crossroads) was the center of Montparnasse and the embodiment of its freedoms, for the American community of the 1920s as it had been for Medieval students.

The video shows what Harris Stuyvesant would have seen as he passed through the area on a bus–cobblestone lanes, a mass of cars, horse-drawn carts and moustachioed bicyclists weaving around trolley cars, pretty girls stepping down from the bus, a crocodile of students crossing the street, and (at 1:44) a gent slipping into a pissoir.
