Rain! Rain!

It’s actually raining here on the Central Coast: real, long-lasting downpours.  Which will probably end instantly, now that I’ve said it aloud, but it’s so lovely to have real wet soggy ground outside my window.

And so, for today’s Throwback Thursday picture, an image of yours truly in the Australian so-called desert, following a rare rainstorm:

LRK to Ayers

That standing water is not a river, it is the road, from Alice Springs to Ayer’s Rock.  Which, being graded down into the desert, naturally was where all the water for miles ended up.  And of course, the mud flew up and clogged the radiator like mad, which meant that we kept having to take off the cap, let it boil down, and gingerly pour in water from the vast store in the back of the jeep. It would have been far better to drive on the surface at the side of the road, but being a good, responsible Californian…

Always an adventure, when it comes to Team LRK.

Wow, I’ve suspected this for years, but you really ARE Mary Russell. I can just see Holmes somewhere out of the picture, immaculately turned out and without a spot of mud on him, and you’d be the one pouring the water in the radiator, while he made notes on kangaroo tracks or something of the sort…..although perhaps Noel wasn’t so annoyingly fastidious as Holmes?

I love this picture. It’s exactly the sort of thing you see in Intrepid Women Travel the Outposts of the Empire memoirs ca 1880-1930.

I love that someone had the presence of mind to take that picture, when surely you must have been in the agony of a “Sh*t, now what!!?” mindset.

I love (and I’ll bet you do too) that you are no longer by the side of that road with the disabled vehicle.

The picture is what I would expect. We just had 43 hours of rain and yes the soggy ground is great and I love the block wall being wet all the way through. Sure is wonderful.

Crikey! What a way to remember Australia. Your photo looks like a scene out of one of “The Gods Must be Crazy” movies from Africa. I will heartily agree with “Susan D” above. That picture is a prize!

I feel I missed out by flying between Ayers Rock and Alice!

Early December and still to need of an umbrella – long, mild Autumn has already bled into cold, crisp, sunny days here in Scotland;-)

When I went from Alice to Uluru it was in 1987, in a nice, airconditioned bus, on a paved road. It rained then too. Green outback desert is an anomaly.
