Boucher’s Con

As you probably know, every year the Crime World [Fictional Division] gathers to discuss pretty much everything to do with crime & mystery books: from character development to social media, e-books to Hollywood. The conference is named after the editor/reviewer/writer Anthony Boucher2454

and this was Bouchercon’s 46th year. We met in Raleigh, and the fun began.

Of course, the funnest part is if you get to win something.

I love the looks of the Anthony Award…not only for what it represents but because it’s a handsome piece in its own right (I order a lot of trophies for programs and events). But why a bowl? Is there a particular reason for that shape?

The bowl is hand turned by a local artist from red burl oak. Also local. Each bowl given to the Anthony winners and our guests of honor was different. The artist carved the bowl based on the personality of the oak.

    Is that R. L. Stone or R. L. Stine?

Kristin, bowls are convenient for woodworkers to turn out (I saw what you did there) and elegant to boot, if you get a nice piece of wood with an attractive grain. Retirees frequently get a koa or other high-end wood bowl around here, instead of the traditional gold watch.

Bouchercon 2015 was so much fun! Of course, one of the best parts was seeing you, Laurie and learning origami. Congratulations on your win!
