My friends at Two Rock Media, who did the superb book trailers for Pirate King and The Language of Bees, have done a new kind of trailer, a sort of audio play excerpt from the book itself.
I love their experiments with how to build a story, and shape one narrative out of another. Who’d have thought a ticking clock and a kettle going on would open a door into The Murder of Mary Russell?

Oh, my goodness! You are correct! The door. The whistle. The steps! Edge of my seat.
So many terrific (as in terrifying and, paradoxically, vivific) elements! Mrs Hudson’s voice fills a gap I didn’t realize exisited in my inner Holmesian life, and is so welcome!
Not just the blood, but also Mary’s knife, her secret weapon, left behind conspire to create a picture of a strangely helpless Russell. The scent of gunsmoke and a warm tea kettle conjure up potential images of what was happening just previous to the bloody incident…and the sound effects, especially that final whistle, anchored me in the place. I haven’t even mentioned all the tasty clues dropped in this compact morsel!

That was wonderful! Reminds me of great old radio shows that stop at a breathtaking moment. Paired with the visuals on the screen, it was quite effective. Is it April yet?

Now THAT is well done, and a perfect introduction. For those of us old enough to remember radio dramas, it starts the anticipation as nothing else has quite done since. The only problem with audiobooks is that you know you can find out what happens next just by listening. We know, though, that it’s twelve more days until we can get… the rest of the story!
