Bricktop outside club

Bricktop outside of one of her clubs in Paris

From page 111: Bricktops was jumping.  Even so, the owner spotted him three steps inside the door and leapt down from her perch to greet him.  “Harris!  I didnt know you were back in towncome here, you big New Yorker, you!

Bricktop (Ada Smith) came to Paris in the early Twenties, befriended Cole Porter, and became the toast of Paris.  She sang in and ran a series of night clubs, where she met many of the greats of twentieth century jazz.  Bricktop and Josephine Baker were at the head of the flowering of black music in Paris during this time. (Owen Wilson’s character goes to Bricktop’s in the film Midnight in Paris.)
