Revelations in Romania

One travels for a lot of reasons. For the scenery—
And the insight into other ways of life—
To learn things—
And see castles—
with dragonic downspouts—
(And don’t forget the companionship—
or the art—
Or even the occasional frisson of danger [click photo to see the roof repairs]—)
But I hadn’t expected to find up in the Carpathian mountains, in the heart of Transylvania, a hotel so unrelentingly hip that the toilet was square, the Kleenex/hair dryer/ trash can might be in MOMA, and working the light switches required a degree in industrial design.
Indeed, I never did figure out what one of the digital widgets controlled…
But that, dear friends, is why one travels.

Ha. The Devi widget is a thermostat. Unless the power light goes off even if it’s running, you may have found the temperature not entirely to your liking.

My Romanian bathroom, the toilet wasn’t bolted to the ground, and the toilet from the room above dripped on your head!!!
Laurie – I have enjoyed reading of your travels in Romania. I presume that you have read the travel writings of Patrick Leigh Fermnor. “Between the Woods and the Water,” the second book of his trilogy recounting his walk across Europe in the early 30s, includes wonderful descriptions of travel in Romania 84 years ago. Transylvania is beautiful. I especially loved the gorgeous carved wooden gates. Where else can you stop at a red light and have a horse drawn wagon pull-up next to you. Not to mention that if you change you money to leu you will at last be a millionaire!
