Sunset, shortly after we passed from Romania into Bulgari. And where, ironically, the massive communication tower glimpsed over the hilltop signalled an almost complete loss of shipboard wifi.
Heading South in the Black Sea, then? I had hoped perhaps you were going to go north, to Odessa – where my husband’s grandparents are from and where I visited with my daughter about 15 years ago. I had thought about approaching from the Black Sea, but ended up approaching overland from Budapest. Odessa was wonderful; the people were wonderful. Before I left the US on that trip I visited with Bel Kaufman, who grew up partly in Odessa, and as an adult used to go out dancing in Romania – maybe Constanta, I think, just as she used to dance in Manhattan (!)
We’re in Budapest at the moment looking at St. Stephen’s Basilica in the light of the setting sun. An almost-full moon in the opposite direction lifting just above the rooftops. Walked across the Danube today and thought of you cruising through Bulgaria. Have a wonderful time. Can’t wait to read about Mary’s travels.

Hi Laurie,
We’re in Budapest at the moment looking at St. Stephen’s Basilica in the light of the setting sun. An almost-full moon in the opposite direction lifting just above the rooftops. Walked across the Danube today and thought of you cruising through Bulgaria. Have a wonderful time. Can’t wait to read about Mary’s travels.
