There be dragons
So, I have this grandson, who was having a birthday. And the kid loves dragons–really loves dragons. So I thought I ought to make him a blanket as I did for his brother a couple of years ago (the brother wanted snakes. Surprisingly cheery, in fact.) And since my town actually has a genuine fabric store–yay, Hart’s!–I wandered in and found dragon fabric, and cotton batting, and gorgeous orange fleece.
I laid it out on the table and pinned it in place with safety pins:
and trimmed the edges of all three layers:
and pinned all the edges with straight pins to run it through the trusty sewing machine–et voilà, a cozy dragon quilt.
Then came a cake. For which chocolate always works, of course. But since the theme of the day was, you know, dragons, and since the local party shop weirdly enough had nothing dragonic, I ended up with three dinosaurs. And discovered that if you put bright and shiny wings onto a T-Rex and an Alkylosaurus, they look like dragons.
And the candle in the mouth means they even breathe flames (with a snow-capped volcano nearby.)
A grandmother’s win.

Well done! I once subbed in for a tardy face painter, because I had time before storytelling . . . time but not much talent, so I promised simple art, like sun, or flowers. A young boy wanted a dragon . . . on his arm. I consulted with him for every step of the work, and his parents watched, so they all knew and could “see” what was what. He was pleased, and they were pleased that he was, and I was happy that face paint smears away fairly quickly. 😉

Draconic is the ‘right word’ but honestly these are all SO CHEERY and CUTE that the softness of dragonic really works, and i like it! Hope your grandsons treasure them. 🙂 #wordgeek

And of course I sew, I’m of the generation that only had store-bought clothes for important functions. I made my own clothes until my kids were half-grown, and pre-made things became cheap.
