Summer delights

Oh, I do love this time of year, every morning:

Strawberries, pineapple, blueberries, and raspberries.

Ahhh.

On facebook couldn’t see that you did indeed have the yogurt … and a little cereal?? (Although I have a new loaf of cranberry yeast bread for toasting tomorrow) And the all important morning cuppa & newspaper. Perfection.

Only then can we face the day with any courage.

My favorite part about living in Washington, DC, besides the historical aspect, is that it is a floral and fauna city. I did not know there were such things in the world. I live on Capitol Hill, and it is a wonderful place to walk because it is a historical district and the houses have to look a historical. It is like walking around 100 years ago. There are alleys that are city property so everybody can use them. They are wonderful short cuts as well as historical in and of themselves. Back in the day, there were little shanties on the alleys rather than apartment buildings houses, etc. These were where slaves, poor free blacks, and poor whites lived. Now they lead to parking spaces and garages. The tree and flowers that fill this area really make life cooler and better on really hot days like today.

The only thing I despise about Washington, DC is the humidity. For the other stuff, I will suffer.

I’m eating LOTS of blackberries and rasberries! Happy Summer everyone!

I’m right with you on that one! As much as I love my winter oatmeal, those fresh berries are my delight!

I’m still waiting on blackberries at the local farm; the only downside to having such a mild spring this year.

A wonderful combination indeed 🙂 I’m enjoying all the berries of the season myself.

For my part, I find it hard to start my day without a good cup of tea. My mother in law tried desperately to encourage a love of coffee, but while I don’t mind a cup now and again, I much prefer a good tea.

In winter I’m quite partial to a nice mug of hot Ribena in the evenings when I curl up with a book.

I missed it terribly my first year in the U.S until my wonderful husband found a nearby store that imported it from England, plus many of my other favourite things from home.

I had no idea that grape was so prevalent and blackcurrants so woefully absent over here at least in Michigan.

Davina — I can’t find currants anywhere either. Not sure why — I thought I remembered my grandmother having a bush but it is gone from the farm now (we’re in Indiana) Be sure to check http://www.localharvest.org/ to find locally grown fruit and veg. Michigan has some wonderful fruit farms!

Wait — search under “currants” and “michigan” in the Local Harvest site and there are several farms listed. I even found one down the road from my house!!
