Surprised by green

A while ago I mentioned that my new garden has been presenting me with surprises at every corner.  As the season grows towards summer, and the anniversary of my taking possession comes along, the anonymous bits of greenery continue to present me with new faces.  Such as this aggressive green bush that I’ve spent weeks beating back into one part of the garden.  It clearly had been planted by someone, so I waited, to see what on earth could justify inviting this land-grabber inside the gates.  And now I have my answer:Spice bush

It’s a spice bush.  Similarly, there are a few scruffy native trees tucked in among the firs and oaks that I could identify, and therefore knew what was coming.  But still a joy to have them burst into mounds of white:DSC01296

Although some of the surprises, well…DSC01273

I have not heard of a spice bush. One knows of many spices, but is a spice bush something special, one can use in the kitchen, or is it just a very spicy invasive weed? You are so blessed to have your new home and I hope it blesses you with new gustatory and visual ideas. I so look forward to your new novel!

And yes, Merrily, that’s a well-chewed stuffed bear. We find many such corpses throughout the garden, left by the previous owner’s large dog.

Laurie, thank goodness, I was thinking “Laurie’s house has BEARS?” Not that you couldn’t handle them if necessary…
And I forgot to say, congratulations on the beautiful greenery!
