Giveaway the First

[Giveaway closed now, thanks for reading!]

To celebrate the publication of The Bones of Paris in six weeks, we are doing three giveaways. Today is the first.
I have four copies of the previous Stuyvesant & Grey adventure, Touchstone, in the UK hardback edition published by Poisoned Pen Press some years ago. They’re signed, they’re very beautiful, and they’re yours for the trying.
Simply make a comment on this blog post (don’t worry if it takes a while to appear–I have to approve new posters, but I promise I will) and we’ll do a random drawing for one of the four copies. US, UK, or UZbekistan, doesn’t matter.
Bonne chance!

I can’t wait to read this!

  4. KB on July 30, 2013 at 3:49 am

I too suffer from shelf envy! I have too many books and too few book shelves, but I can always find room for one more!

  5. Michele Olson on July 30, 2013 at 3:50 am

I’m so looking forward to the release of The Bones of Paris, and had already planned to reread Touchstone this month.

Paris is on my mind. My son and his wife leave this weekend for that beautiful city on their long-awaited and greatly-earned honeymoon. She has a background in French literature, although she now teaches math to middle-schoolers in the Bronx (and loves it.) I’m going to send her a link to your Pinterest page; I think she’ll enjoy it.

As for myself, I look forward to opening “Bones” with some good croissant, strong coffee (wine?) and Edith Piaf.

  6. Amanda Pough on July 30, 2013 at 3:52 am

I am getting close to the end of what I am reading now and starting to get twitchy I haven’t picked out the next book to read. This could solve that problem!

  7. Shari on July 30, 2013 at 3:56 am

Am working my way through your Russell and Holmes novels….so thrilled to have found you!

  8. Amy on July 30, 2013 at 3:58 am

“[T]rying” is right! I might start in possession of it, but your books always end up making the rounds to and through my friends and family!

  9. Linda Barnett on July 30, 2013 at 4:01 am

Can’t wait for Bones to come out!!

  10. Shawna Reppert on July 30, 2013 at 4:02 am

Love all your work. Looking forward to reading more.

  11. Fred M. Hyde on July 30, 2013 at 4:09 am

This is one ol’ country boy who is trying to be patient while waiting for ‘The Bones of Paris’, but I really need a new Mr. & Mrs. Holmes fix.

  12. Karen Bock-Losee on July 30, 2013 at 4:11 am

What’s going on in my head right now: I really shouldn’t enter a contest to win a book. I’m supposed to begetting rid of books in preparation for a move from DC to Florida! But this is LRK. Ok, OK, just don’t win, for God’s sake.

  13. Linda K on July 30, 2013 at 4:13 am

I already love your Mary Russell series, so I am looking forward to trying this one. Thanks.

  14. Julie Goodrich on July 30, 2013 at 4:24 am

Having similar thoughts to Karen- I don’t NEED new books…but it’s LRK! I don’t own Touchstone and would dearly love to 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  15. Jen Gentle on July 30, 2013 at 4:26 am

I enjoy all of your work so much. Help make my bibliophile brother jealous, and pick me to win a signed hv copy of one of your books!

  16. Barbara on July 30, 2013 at 4:29 am

Would love to win it – downside? Once I own a book in a series, I start wanting them all rather than just reading from library – and very little shelf space remaining

  17. Jane Cramer on July 30, 2013 at 4:30 am

Touchstone was a great tale, looking forward to Bones of Paris.

  18. Diana Lazareva on July 30, 2013 at 4:32 am

Now who wouldn’t be tempted by this? I have been reading LRK books since I was 11 and moving from NYC to London in 1997. A family friend introduced me to Mary Russell and England. It was the best gift I ever received. Thank you Laurie for your books and keep them coming!

  19. John Bychowski on July 30, 2013 at 4:34 am

I am truly a sucker for a chance at a beautiful book!!

  23. wortsplitter on July 30, 2013 at 4:44 am

that would be my first Stuyvesant & Grey adventure but maybe the beginning of a new addiction 😀

  24. Kathy on July 30, 2013 at 4:45 am

I used to have a shelf like that, running along the ceiling! It held my collection of Travis McGee and my collection of Agatha Christie!

  25. Peggy Busch on July 30, 2013 at 4:49 am

I can’t wait for Bones of Paris, and I’m sure Touchstone would be a great read, too!

  34. Robin Sommo on July 30, 2013 at 5:07 am

I love _Touchstone_ and would love to have anything you signed, but this in particular sounds like a beautiful copy. Russell and Holmes have my heart, but I’d also love to see another installment in any of your wonderful stories.

  35. HopeB on July 30, 2013 at 5:07 am

I’m looking forward to “The Bones of Paris!” What a great setting for a novel. “Locked Rooms” is my favorite Mary Russell.

  43. Amanda Bourne on July 30, 2013 at 5:18 am

  44. Christine on July 30, 2013 at 5:19 am

  45. Paige Henson on July 30, 2013 at 5:20 am

So happy you are in our universe, Laurie! What delight you bring.

  46. Karen Cook on July 30, 2013 at 5:22 am

Great idea for adding more book space. I have shelves covering all the walls and beneath the windows, but not above the windows. It would be fantastic to add the “give-away” books to my collection. Looking forward to reading your new book!

  47. Karen Debenham on July 30, 2013 at 5:22 am

Touchstone is one book of yours I have not read ( how embarrassing to admit) . If I do not win the giveaway, I will be sure to find my own copy for enjoyment. Also, like the over the windows shelf for books…a terrific space-saving idea.

  48. Aurora Sherman on July 30, 2013 at 5:29 am

Thank you for the giveaway!! Can’t wait for Bones of Paris!

  49. Lise Waring on July 30, 2013 at 5:32 am

  50. Brenna Bychowski on July 30, 2013 at 5:38 am

One of the few LRK books I haven’t yet read. I should probably do that before the new one comes out 🙂

  51. Diane Schultz on July 30, 2013 at 5:39 am

How sweet it would be to win a Laura King book, yes? Yes. Definitely yes.

  52. Jill Schaffer on July 30, 2013 at 5:41 am

Your books have become my absolute favorites, Laurie! I can’t wait for the newest to arrive!

  53. Leslie McIntosh on July 30, 2013 at 5:44 am

Years ago I was given a Sony ereader which I had to appear like a cad and return because I happen to love the feel of paper and the sensation of turning a page. My library sits on shelves much like your library and I would be honored to have another of your books grace those shelves. Always a pleasure to see you releasing a new book.

  54. Tish Corgimom Frederick on July 30, 2013 at 5:51 am

One random chance, coming up! 🙂

  57. Roxanne on July 30, 2013 at 5:54 am

I, too, lack shelf space. I have taken to cleaning out and donating my books in preparation for a move. But there are those books I will keep forever and never part with, starting with any by LRK. A UK edition of Touchstone would be a welcome addition.

  58. Elettra on July 30, 2013 at 6:01 am

It would be great to win one of your books, Ma’am!

  59. Rachel Carroll on July 30, 2013 at 6:03 am

  62. Carol Collin on July 30, 2013 at 6:05 am

Laurie, I have read every book you have written, and always eagerly await the next one. I like the way you incorporate historical elements into the novels, and how plot twists keep me guessing to the end of the book. I am looking forward to reading Bones of Paris.

  63. Emily Ward on July 30, 2013 at 6:06 am

This is very exciting! I could use a book to read that isn’t a textbook! 🙂

  64. Debbie Meeske on July 30, 2013 at 6:06 am

  70. Gail Lelyveld on July 30, 2013 at 6:20 am

My public library will be the winner if I win because it will get my paperback immediately.

  71. Tricia Mills on July 30, 2013 at 6:20 am

Thank you, Laurie, for keeping Sherlock alive for me. I fell in love with him in 1964 in high school, and never looked back. His relationship with Miss Russell is so believable. I was thrilled when i traveled to London, found my hotel on Russell Square, (The Penn Club). If ever your books are filmed, I would hope you can get Benedict Cumberbatch as your Sherlock.

  72. Hilary on July 30, 2013 at 6:24 am

Just this morning I was complaining to my room mate about how we have too many books, and we really need to get rid of some. Oh well!

  73. Doug Adair on July 30, 2013 at 6:24 am

I have been in love with Ms. King since The Beekeeper’s Apprentice.

  74. Dennis van den Braak on July 30, 2013 at 6:27 am

I love your Mary Russell books and am ready to read your others. An autograph of yours would be a sweet bonus.

  77. Rachel Mustain on July 30, 2013 at 6:36 am

I love all of your books. I just wasn’t smart enough to discover your series until after I graduated from UCSC. I would have tried really hard to meet you. I read a lot, but Mary Russell is my favorite fictional detective of all time. Thank you for all of the lovely, fascinating writing.

  78. Heather Simmons on July 30, 2013 at 6:39 am

I really don’t deserve to win as I owe you a thank you card for the prize I won at last years twitter garden party (when is the next one?) so I am taking this opportunity to say THANK YOU. My only excuse is that in the past year I have lost my job and found another one and tomorrow am closing on my new house in another state. I am a librarian, but my husband calls weeding book genocide so we have more books than will fit on our numerous bookcases, but I can always make room for a Laurie R. King book.

  79. Victoria Taylor on July 30, 2013 at 6:42 am

would love to win! I’ve read all of your books, and am impatient for Bones of Paris! 😀

  80. Lee Frank on July 30, 2013 at 6:42 am

I love and have read all of the Beekeeper’s Apprentice “Sherlock” books by Laurie King. I would love to start reading the Stuyvesant & Grey adventures.

  81. Beth Sundermeyer on July 30, 2013 at 6:43 am

I have a copy of Touchstone, and I loved it. As one of your unpaid PR people, I would happily pass my copy on to one of my friends or former students if I won one from you. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Thurber House in Columbus the week before my birthday…happy birthday to me!!!

  82. Lydia on July 30, 2013 at 6:49 am

Whoop! Chance to win free book, heck ya! Laurie’s writing is always spot on. Her characters, plot development, etc. is something I aspire to! When I grow up, I want to be a writer like her! 😉

  83. Vero on July 30, 2013 at 6:50 am

I’d love to have an autographed LRK book! And I really enjoyed this particular one. Thanks!

Win or lose, a new title to add to my “to read” list!

  91. Lindsay Hamilton on July 30, 2013 at 7:05 am

Love your work, Ms. King! My vote for film actors would be Cate Blanchett as Mary Russell, Alan Rickman as Sherlock. I cannot decide about Harris Stuyvesant – maybe Benedict Cumberbatch.

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  92. Shirley Francis on July 30, 2013 at 7:11 am

I first came across your work, when I borrowed a cassette recording of one of your books, ‘The Beekeeper’s Apprentice’, and enjoyed the life of Sherlock after Baker street, that I now have several of your books.

  93. Barb Tuohey on July 30, 2013 at 7:14 am

Thank you for keeping a timeless character alive. I have recommended your books to so many people looking for a new read that doesn’t have a muscled male on the cover. Winning a book would be icing on the cake!

  94. Lana Kamennof-Sine on July 30, 2013 at 7:14 am

Think you might well be called THE Author if Sherlock were required to name you. I certainly laud your plots, characters, ambience & general brilliance to all & sundry. You’ve a gift and a well honed skill & I thank you for sharing with us all.

  95. Barb Tuohey on July 30, 2013 at 7:16 am

Any chance of a midwestern tour someday?

  109. Skip Collinge on July 30, 2013 at 7:56 am

I’ll keep it short as you will have many entries today. I’m merely a big fan of you! The Mary Russell series has given me so many happy hours reading and even re-reading your books. Why Sherlock Holmes captivated me as a boy and while he (and now Mary) still keeps my interest at a very high level at 62, is really no mystery. Intelligence, a strong moral code, a true knight. Conan Doyle was a master story teller, and you have the same talent to transform the written word into a painted picture in my mind.

And to increase my interest, I’ve added Mary to the legend for the last 15 plus years. Showing her growth as a person as well as her craft is simply amazing. Thank you for so many pleasurable hours. I will confess that I haven’t read your other books, but “Bones of Paris” interests me tremendously and its on my pre-bought list at Amazon. Thank you again Laurie!

I am a HUGE fan of ALL your works. I think it is exciting how you can write totally different characters and themes. Such talent! I’m always excited by a new work of yours. This time included!

  127. Frances Brown on July 30, 2013 at 9:09 am

I would love to win a copy! I anticipate your new novels with glee. Thank you!

  128. Mary Beth on July 30, 2013 at 9:12 am

I must admit I haven’t ventured away from the Mary Russell books, but I would if I won one!!!

  129. Lynda Minter on July 30, 2013 at 9:15 am

Come back to Seattle soon! We love Sherlock and Mary..

  130. Lynda Minter on July 30, 2013 at 9:15 am

    Come back to Seattle!

  131. Susan Gainen on July 30, 2013 at 9:17 am

I await every single one of your books with bated breath and an open checkbook.

  132. Matt Bishop on July 30, 2013 at 9:18 am

Be careful — your books are addicting (especially the Mary Russell/Sherlock Homes ones); indeed, they are so addicting they may be illegal!!!

  133. Kirsten on July 30, 2013 at 9:19 am

Always excited to see a new title from you! I’m in Vancouver where your books are in high demand at the library — I was the one waitlisted on the 25 copies of “Garment of Shadows”. Finally got it and was most pleased. 🙂

  134. MR Graham on July 30, 2013 at 9:23 am

I want a bookshelf that spans an entire wall. Currently stuck with a series of the waist-high ones from Le Target. I tried stacking them, but they didn’t take kindly to that, and one attacked me. That said, I’m sure I have a square foot of surface area somewhere that could accommodate another book!

  135. John Wallach on July 30, 2013 at 9:25 am

Waiting with bated breath for the next in the Kate Martinelli series. Absolutely adored “The Art Of Detection”. I’ve read it twice (well, actually, because of failing eyesight, I’ve listened to the recorded version twice) and am working my way through the others slowly so as not to run out of material too fast.

  136. Jennifer Wald on July 30, 2013 at 9:30 am

You have been one of my favorite authors since the first time I read The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. When I ran out of that series, I was thrilled to discover your other novels. I can’t get enough! Unfortunately, I think my husband is going to make me wait until our anniversary in October before I can read this one. I’d sneak and read it before hand from the library when they get a copy, but I’m sure the waiting list will be forever long.

  137. Rachel N. on July 30, 2013 at 9:40 am

If you make it to Seattle and Portland, a detour to Aunties Bookstore in Spokane, WA would be very gratefully received! My mom and I have been reading your books together since I was little–First at bedtime, and now we read independently and compare thoughts.

  138. Hannah on July 30, 2013 at 9:44 am

Oh I do love the title of the new tale. It seems as if Miss Russell has insinuated herself into my life permanently, now: I think of her whenever I hear references to certain Middle Eastern locales, or to Oxford, or any number of other things. But never fear, it is an insinuation I accept gladly. Many small, secret smiles on my part.

  139. aishoka on July 30, 2013 at 9:46 am

So glad you’re getting us back in touch with Stuyvesant & Grey! (;>)
Loved hearing from you at the Mass Lib Assoc conference a while back–why not swing back over to the East Coast?

  140. Jen Mustoe on July 30, 2013 at 9:51 am

I’m still hoping that Mary Russell is a real person. Please tell me she is.

  141. Terry p on July 30, 2013 at 9:52 am

    Can’t wait!

  142. Jessica Peterson on July 30, 2013 at 9:57 am

    Can’t wait for publication!

  171. Bill Sisson on July 30, 2013 at 12:33 pm

Loved “Touchstone,” and I’m very much looking forward to “Bones.” One of my favorite time periods and places, the American expatriate community in Paris. I came to it originally from the classical music side (Copland, Thomson, Nadia Boulanger), and that’s grown into an obsession with the literary, poetic & artistic scenes. Now you’re going to take me underground! How cool is that?

  172. Debra Waters on July 30, 2013 at 12:40 pm

My first visit to your Web site–and I find you are having a giveaway–cool!

  179. Kath Case on July 30, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Looking forward to Bones of Paris with bated breath. Your characters are so full of life. My family have become quite used to me speaking if Mary Russell as if she is a close friend. My youngest daughter has become a avid reader also and the books I bought for her are being consumed as quickly as we’re mine.

  180. Marlene Head on July 30, 2013 at 1:22 pm

  190. Kay Ramsbottom on July 30, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Touchstone? TOUCHSTONE?!? You mean there’s a Laurie King I haven’t read? I can’t believe this oversight! Hope you’re having a fab time in the homeland of Russell and Holmes. Excuse me while I head to the nearest bookstore!

  191. Gail Streun on July 30, 2013 at 3:36 pm

    yay for free books! 🙂

  194. Heather B from SC on July 30, 2013 at 4:27 pm

I’d be happy to read even a broken spined, half done preview copy or an unedited pdf file…. I just can’t wait and am so excited for the next book! Each one of your books are like little presents I give to myself when I read them. Most mysteries and fiction I inhale too quickly, but Russell and Holmes I savor, and try to make them last as much as possible, even a week if I can. Thankfully, your adept prose is worth being carefully read rather than skimmed, so even a second reading is a treat. Thanks for entering me in the drawing, and hope you know how much we love the books!

  195. Jamie on July 30, 2013 at 4:48 pm

I love that your last few book releases have managed to coincide with my birthday. It makes coming up with gift suggestions so simple!

  196. Barbara Markusic on July 30, 2013 at 5:06 pm

I own every one of your books….I love the Mary Russell series…except for the Pirate book…that left me cold. JUSTICE HALL and O JERUSALEM are my favorites. I picked up TOUCHSTONE but haven’t read it yet. Would love to have an autographed copy.

  201. Pamela Ossorio on July 30, 2013 at 5:33 pm

I’m re-reading “The Moor’, and can’t wait for “The Bones of Paris”. I’ve misplaced “The Bee Keeper’s Apprentice”, so I NEED a new LRK!

  202. Kathe Gust on July 30, 2013 at 5:42 pm

As usual, I appreciate you bringing out the new book in time for my birthday. It always solves my sister’s problem on what to give me in such a happy way for both of us!

  203. Corrie on July 30, 2013 at 5:47 pm

I am very excited about a new book. I love your work Laurie. Your book “The Beekeeper’s Apprentice” launched me into the world of reading in grade 7 as I had never experience it before. It changed me into a life long reader overnight. I went from being blase about reading to loving it because of you. Thank you.

  218. Christina on July 30, 2013 at 11:53 pm

Why on earth did I write Brides revisited, when I meant Brideshead revisited by Evelyn Waugh? Sorry about that!

  219. Marie Cécile on July 31, 2013 at 1:17 am

Hope we will see you soon in Paris !

  220. Laurie on July 31, 2013 at 4:36 am

  222. Elizabeth P on July 31, 2013 at 7:21 pm

At this point, Mary Russell feels like a dear friend. But perhaps she wouldn’t mind if I branched out and read Touchstone? Can’t wait to try it and Bones of Paris (best book title ever!), too.

  223. Katherine B on August 1, 2013 at 1:31 am

I’m very excited to meet a new character. Plus, Paris has long been my favourite city, even though I don’t live there.
I can’t wait until Bones of Paris comes to New Zealand.

  224. Maryann C. on August 1, 2013 at 9:13 am

Having just discovered your book in the past few months, I am now happily reading all I can find. Have read all the Kate M. series and am moving on to Mary Russell. Would love to win a new book. It’s been a good summer for reading.

  225. Jan Pruitt on August 1, 2013 at 4:04 pm

Always excited when a new book by you comes out! I just downsized (800 books went to the Friends of the Library in Tuscaloosa, AL), but if I should be fortunate to win the autographed book, I’ll be honored to give it prime space on my slimmed-down bookshelves!

  226. Ellen Simmons on August 1, 2013 at 4:10 pm

Well, I thought I’d read all of Ms. King’s books, but somehow I missed Touchstone. Yikes quelle domage or maybe just MERDE! I will get me to the library posthaste! If I don’t win this stunning copy I’ll buy it to add to my LRK collection. BTW, I am trying to figure out Pinterest so I can be part of that fun too.

  227. Gioia on August 4, 2013 at 12:38 am

What a wonderful gift to your readers! Thank you, Laurie, for this fun opportunity!

  228. michael christofield on August 4, 2013 at 8:14 am

I discovered The Beekeeper’s Apprentice in a box of books when I was a kid and have been hooked since. Although I’ve primarily been reading the Mary Russell series, I’ve since crossed over to the Kate Martinelli series with The Art of Detection and found that series just as enjoyable. Clearly you are a grave talent. OK, that was cheesy. But thanks for writing entertaining books.

  229. Shirley Francis on August 4, 2013 at 9:15 am

To have a signed copy of a book from a favourite author, is very special. Hope I’m lucky.

  230. Ginia Magers on August 4, 2013 at 7:11 pm

I am certain that I am fairly obsessed with Laurie King’s work! I am going to be using birthday money, student loan money, dropped change from the sidewalk… to purchase full sets. Would love to win to add to collection!!!

  231. Jill on August 6, 2013 at 4:17 pm

A shiny new signed edition would be an outstanding addition to my otherwise well-thumbed and dog-eared collection of your works. 🙂

  232. Frances Goodson Wang on August 8, 2013 at 2:23 pm

I always buy multiple copies of your new books, first editions, hardback of course, to keep for my children’s future wealth!
I am a Sherlockian who appreciates how happy Russell makes dear Sherlock. I have read and enjoyed all of your series, though.
I was one of the original Letters of Mary group.
    How times flies…..

  233. Okie on August 13, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Would love to win this. My wife is a huge fan and she’s got me hooked on the Russell series (I’m only through book 2, but I’ll catch up soon)
