The market was a reassuring bedlam of horse-drawn carts and blaring truck horns, and Stuyvesant lined up with the last of the nights drunks, the first of the days market loaders, and the tiredest of the prostitutes for that most traditional of restoratives.

 

Men and women in evening dress fighting hangovers with doses of onion soup makes for a common theme of novels from the early twentieth century.  And as restoratives go, hot onion soup in a busy marketplace is better than many.
