i love your description of the same era i also lived in communes, hitched rides, etc. Wasn’t as lucky as you: one driver attempted to abduct me, and i survived only by jumping out of the car on the Bay Bridge, an event that has haunted me in various ways ever since. I really dislike the new genre of “I grew up on a hippie commune and it was awful” books but i have such faith in you as a writer that i know i will love what you’ve produced here. We women who lived during this era have to try to deal our stories, or “tell it slant,” as Emily Dickinson wrote. Thank you! I just published a book called “House of Four Doors,” which tells part of my own story.

Oh, I imagine that episode haunts you. Hard to explain to kids, raised on horrible things, that it felt normal at the time to get into cars with strangers.

I hope you enjoy the book, which is low on the “awful commune” downer.

      Laurie
