autumnal color

This is my favorite time of year. One of the pleasures of late fall is the view out my window, of a single tree, probably a liquidamber, that becomes scarlet as soon as the frost hits it:
To my amusement, I realized a couple of years ago that the people on that side of the valley are seeing a similar view, only on the west-facing slope, because of the tree (mine a Japanese maple) next to my deck. Which from my point of view, looks like this:

The view from my window in Edinburgh just now is over a foot of snow – it’s come way to early this year, we didn’t get Autumn!

Thank you, Laurie, for the beautiful photos. I had never heard of the liquidamber tree and discover that it’s what in our part of the country is called the sweetgum. At my previous condo we had a two-story tall sweetgum directly across from the breezeway. It is glorious in autumn.

What a pretty place you live, Laurie! Here the trees are bare, alas, except for the evergreens – but we did have a beautiful fall. I like the name “liquidamber tree,” prettier somehow than Sweetgum!
