I’m headed up to San Francisco today to talk to the great folks at the 826 Valencia writing project.  The goal of the 826 project (they’re also in New York, DC, etc etc) is to build the writing skills of kids ages 6 to 18.  I’l pause for a minute while you pop over and look at their site, here.

No, really, go take a look.  Because in the header, you’ll see this fellow helping a kid write:

And over on the sidebar, you’ll see a thing called the Pirate Supply Store.

That’s right: the theme of the San Francisco store is pirates.

Now you see why I’m so excited to go up to SF today and watch the kids write?

Because this year, I’m going to be Laurie Arrrgh! King!

What a wonderful enterprize! Among the pirate supplies, I especially liked the bottle of Scurvy Begone and the Mermaid Bait and Repellent.

I’m sure both you and the kids will have a great time today. Thank you for doing this kind of thing.

Wouldn’t “Scurvy Begone” just be like orange juice?

“At San Francisco’s only independent pirate supply store”

I love the above statement. Like every city has a independent pirate supply store. LOL What serendipity this is…a writing project for children and the tie to pirates. It is a publicists dream.

If only I were in San Francisco, I’d be there in a heartbeat. What a great project. I’m pleased to see they have two locations in L.A. Something to consider for volunteer work in the future. Thank you for sharing this and have, arrrgh, a great time today.

Getting a little nutty about pirates, are ya? I can just see your closets/cupboards in the next few weeks after that trip to SF. 😉

Lard, mops and glass eyes. All proceeds go to support the writing project. Your shopping list is not yet complete! //Meredith

I wonder what the store is like on Talk Like A Pirate Day. Probably just a normal day for them.

My Birthday is on “Talk like a pirate day” and one year, my best friends made me a pirate hat and sung me a piratey “happy birthday song”. It was hillarious! I cannot wait for the next Russell book!

This , 826 National, has several stores around the country, each with a different theme. The San Francisco one is pirates, the Brooklyn one is superheroe supplies, and so on. You can see the stores (and find out more about the organization) here:

On a different note, I was wondering if LRK could comment on the letter to the editor from the US counsel for the Conan Doyle Estate in today’s NY Times:

    What’s up with this?

Sorry, that first sentence should start with “This *company*.” Teach me to preview and make sure I haven’t zapped any words….

Recently discovered your books and absolutely love them! You have a textured writing style that is a joy to read. Have read three of your books now and have just ordered all the rest from my local bookstore! Keep them coming!
