Sylvia Beach with James Joyce at Shakespeare & Co., Paris

From page 58: Sylvia Beach stood in the doorway of Shakespeare and Company, looking like a wind-blown city sparrow. She was talking to a poet. Stuyvesant knew he was a poet by the hair, not so much cut as prunedbut then, who in Montparnasse wasn’t a poet?

Sylvia Beach’s bookshop, publishing house, mail drop, occasional hotel, and impromptu wine bar was the center of the American community of Paris. If an American was looking for a room to share, a buddy to travel with, or a missing young woman, Shakespeare & Co was a good place to begin.
